NSI Research and Symposia
Local field studies and workshops are foundational to planning and evaluating the impact of NSI’s work. From the start, NSI has been conducting original research on rural health care workers in Nepal, seeking hard data about the situation on the ground. Completed studies are summarized here with links.
Field Study:
April 2011
Provision of a skilled birth attendant at deliveries is foundational to the goal of reducing maternal mortality and meeting the millennium development goals. For this reason, Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population is involved in a large-scale program of training 5000 skilled birth attendants by 2012; so far over 2000 have been produced.

The Medical Doctorate in General Practice (MDGP) began in 1982 as an initiative of the Tribhuvan University and the University of Calgary, Canada. Phases 1and 2 had overseas components but Phase 3 from 1991 has been conducted entirely within Nepal.

Like many other countries, Nepal struggles to provide adequate healthcare to those living in rural areas. Over 80% of the population live in rural areas; however the majority of doctors live and work in Kathmandu.

In Nepal, as in many parts of the world, there is a major problem providing healthcare to those living in rural areas. There is a huge rural-to-urban disparity reflected in the physician-to-population ratios of 1:1000 for urban centres and 1:41000 for rural areas.

In a joint project with the National Health Training Centre (NHTC), NSI conducted an extensive clinical skills assessment of 163 mid-level non-midwifery workers in 4 rural districts of the country.
Field Study:
Summer 2006
Through questionnaires and personal interviews, the NSI study team determined the location and practice type of all 99 General Practice (Family Medicine) doctors trained in Nepal.
Field Study:

NSI study team conducted on-site assessment of health care workers in 23 district hospitals in Nepal in order to determine actual staffing patterns for different levels of worker.
Focused Assessment:
March - June 2006
In a joint project with the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), NSI conducted a focused assessment of 9 mid-level health care training institutions working under CTEVT.
Conference:
March 2006
A symposium of national and international experts discussed the family practice (GP) doctor situation in Nepal and developed strategies for strengthening this cadre.
Public Health School Project:
October 2005
MPH students at Harvard School of Public Health conducted a consultation (including literature review) that informed NSI in developing its original concept document.
Literature Review:
January 2005
NSI Task force assembled this annotated bibliography of international reference pertaining to the issue of retaining health care workers in remote locations.
